My son joined St Dominics in Grade 1 this academic year and so far he is flourishing. This school has exceeded all expectations. The staff are wonderful. My son is learning so much and is excited to go to school each day. Great, modern facilities. Wonderful field trips which support their school projects. Highly recommend!

I worked two years for Saint Dominics' 黑料福利社. I really enjoyed Lisbon and its people. It is a lovely and charming city. The school teachers are mostly Portuguese and they are very friendly. But I am writing to warn international teachers not to work for this school and parents not to send their children there. The management has no leadership and very little academic background. They offer all three IB programmes but the school culture does not follow the IB principles and values at all. It is run as a business, not as an education center.

Had a very cohesive cohort and that was a very strong platform that facilitated my adaptability in the school. Was also very fortunate to have encountered some very good teachers, which is very important!

Multi-cultural environment with a solid track record. My experience at St. Dominics Int School was second to none and has helped me progress in life with the right mind-set and skillet needed to succeed. Joined in 1996 and graduated in 2010 completing the IB programme before moving to the UK. The education, the teachers, the culture and the opportunities provided were invaluable, giving us all the space to grow our own ways without limiting our capabilities and investing on areas we're strong in as well as supporting us on areas to develop further. A school to remember and recommend to any future student.

I attended St.Dominic's from ages 6 to 18, and my experience was a tale of two schools. The very positive valuation below of the facilities, teachers, academics, reflects the majority of my experience - even without rose-tinted glasses, it was truly great. Although we did have some teachers that were not as good - particularly in IT and DT -, the teachers were overall wonderful educators. I loved to learn here, to participate, and to do community service - and I can say that my classmates (even the rowdy ones) did too :) I would say the school embodied the IB pedagogical approach and more. The nuns who led the school (shoutout to the lovely sister Patricia) with the then headmistress, took care to make the school a loving, multicultural, thriving educational community. It felt like a little village or family. However, when the management changed, unfortunately the quality plummeted, and this was during my last 2-3 years at this school I believe. It was a palpable change, which visibly affected our teachers (many of whom left at the time), and the management's obsession with profit decreased the care and quality provided to students. The school environment in itself also degraded - from taring down green spaces, 'getting rid' of the pups the community had adopted, to erecting 'container' unproperly insulated classrooms (that seem to have proliferated since I've left)... If I were to classify the last two years, it would be given a Poor performance - and only not 'very poor' because of the teachers who made sure to give us the best they could despite the difficulties. I wish the best for this school, I truly hope that it will re-establish it's former pedagogical, educational and nurturing excellence, but from what I have heard it has been difficult. From the pictures I've seen, it seems like the play areas and green spaces are mostly gone, being replaced by 'container' structures.. I would kindly remind the current management that a school is not a 'factory'. Overall, if I was living in Portugal and had school-age children, I would pay a visit to St.Dominic's and try to understand its current state, pedagogical approach, and the school community's environment. However, if the ship has stayed the course it was setting when I graduated, I would most definitely opt for another school.

I attended St Dominic's from Nursery to Year 12 and have the fondest memories from this school. What stood out was the teachers and pupils, to the point that 12 years later we are still in touch. It was a happy place for me which I enjoyed going to everyday and learning a variety of disciplines.

I taught at St.Dominic's for four years. As soon as I arrived I knew I was "home". Although I left to go teach in other countries, I returned every summer and recently came home to stay. I was invited to the 10-years+2 reunion for the class of 2010, a wonderful group of individuals who provided me with some of the most rewarding experiences and opportunities for growth in my career. It was the first time I had been at the school in 12 years. That the school would support the efforts of these former students by providing the venue and making the catering arrangements reminded me of the "welcome home" atmosphere I encountered when I first arrived. I was welcomed graciously by the school's Principal, Steve Blackburn and other teachers who are still on staff at the school, whom I knew from our days as teacher colleagues. I would say to anyone thinking of joining the school as a teacher or as a family, this is who St. Dominic's is - a welcoming family you can always come home to.

Quality staff who are IB experienced whose first consideration is for the students. Students are happy and well behaved have a strong ethos of working to the best of their abilities. The school has over 40 nationalities of students and 21 for teaching staff. The school has a calm atmosphere with students having good opportunities for sports, arts and cultural activities. My children are very happy at this school.

The establishment is totally business oriented, very poor academically, no one with Pedagogy or Education background in the management level to support a strong curriculum. I have never seen an international school so disorganized! I removed my kids from there as soon as I got places in another school.

Ignore comments, suggestions and reviews of students and former teachers, they fire teachers for asking questions, do things against the law such as doing a face to face exam during total lockdown. Teachers are overall fine, some really good and caring ones, some ignorant, bad or annoying teachers. Strict and outdated uniforms, ridiculously expensive, low quality and uncomfortable. If failed to comply with school dress code, students will receive a detention and be sent home. The school is ridiculously expensive yet they fail to provide basic necessities such as pencils and erasers, and the few computers that are provided barely even work, if they do work, they take about 10 minutes to even be usable. The school playground look like prison courts, mis repaired and unappealing playgrounds. The food is healthy but bland and boring, many students starve rather than go eat the refectory food. The school fails to deal with social problems such as bullying, supports the offender and punishes the victim of the bully. Education and academics are great, good learning opportunity overall, obvious flaws in the system however. Overall a bad school, mainly based on what happens outside the classrooms.

I am a parent and retired teacher. I have spent time speaking with all of my child's teachers and have found all qualified and committed to student achievement. I was concerned with the many bad reviews when we started at this school 4 years ago, but have found that the school is doing a good job educating my kid. All schools need to constantly work to improve and I think this school has been doing this. The negative comments seem to focus on management, which I am sure does negatively influence teacher moral. I would recommend this school to others.

I chose St Dominic's because while being an IB school, because the atmosphere provided by teachers and the facilities, assured me that my kids would feel good there. And they do. More than their academic success, I want both my kids to feel like they want to go to school, because they like it. I know this school is over 40 years old, so some bad reviews are to be expected. But as a school father reading all these bad, and at some point insulting reviews, I can only assume they were written by someone with a lot of grudge against the school and when that happens, the result is never good. Ultimately, my advice to other families is to go and visit the school first and reach you own conclusions. Me and my family know that St. Dominic's was the best choice for us.

Stay away from this mess. Absolutely pathetic behavior and attitudes from the owners and management. This is a full for profit school where greed trumps everything. There is very little interest in providing the children with a quality education. There are a lot of bad reviews for this school, and with good reason. Check out the other international schools in the Lisbon area before you commit to this circus. You鈥檒l be glad you did, as there are so many better options. Be aware that most of the positive reviews are written by the owners and staff in desperate and blatant attempts to salvage the ratings.

SDIS is a school with absolutely zero interest in delivering a good education, and puts it's students and staff at risk. This week the school was ordered to close after the FORCED staff and students to attend work on campus during a LOCKDOWN! The school responded by threatening staff for complaining to the authorities and published a letter on their social media claiming they are mistreated. What a joke. You can find the media reports here, which can be translated through the internet. https://tvi24.iol.pt/sociedade/sao-domingos-de-rana/policia-ordena-fecho-de-colegio-onde-42-alunos-iam-fazer-exame-em-cascais https://www.tsf.pt/portugal/sociedade/policia-chamada-a-colegio-privado-em-cascais-alunos-preparavam-se-para-fazer-um-exame-13263185.html https://www.sabado.pt/portugal/detalhe/policia-fecha-colegio-em-cascais-onde-42-alunos-iam-fazer-exame I STRONGLY ADVISE ANY PROSPECTIVE TEACHERS AND PARENTS TO AVOID THIS SCAM OF A SCHOOL. I am a former teacher who has just finished working for the 鈥榮chool鈥. My experience at this shit school was the worst professional experience I have ever had and I would like to share this with you so that you are not duped by this deceitful organisation. I also want to dedicate this site to all those teachers that were cheated, oppressed and bullied by the 鈥榮chool鈥. Before we begin, this school is NOT an international school. They have international teachers, with a thrown together IB curriculum but this company is all about money. 鈥 Administration The school is owned by 3 individuals who have shady reputations . The school is run by one of the owners who is at school every day, a vile woman Catarina Formigo. Lets just say it is a dictatorship where she enjoys the power she gets at the school. As the Portuguese culture is more dominated by men, this is the one place where she finds power, so I think she enjoys firing people on a whim and enjoys it when people grovel in her office. The woman does not have a clue about education or the progression of children. From what I have seen, the heads of the school fear this woman, they are afraid to make decisions on their own two feet and everything has to go through her. Recently she was described as a 鈥渧isionary鈥 for revamping the toilets 鈥 as if this will help in the academic attainment of the students. She suffers from a huge inferiority complex as anyone who upsets her whether it be parents, or staff, she always demands a written apology. 鈥 Racism I thought I would start off with this one. The school employs a huge mixture of nationalities including UK, and South Africa to name just a few. However, salaries are paid according to nationalities and not merit. Housing allowances are given to some and not others. Holiday pay seems to only be given to individuals who are related to 鈥榠mportant鈥 people within the Portuguese community The Cascais C芒mara (the local council in which the school lies) has prominent employees sending their children to this school. They do so paying staff school fees and it鈥檚 obviously in exchange for flouting local government regulations Catarina is also racist to various parent groups telling parents she was getting rid of the Brazilians, overcharging the Angolans and Chinese parents Females both parents and staff are often referred to bitches and whores as she often loses her temper and walks around the administration office screaming and ranting Coming to this school will also mean giving up the weekend and some of your evenings too. Once you signed for this school you are expected to do as you are told and work when and where they say, concept of weekend does not exist if Catarina says so. This school is run as a business, not a school. I don鈥檛 understand why the place has the word school in their title. Instead of St Dominics 黑料福利社 school it should be St Dominics International Cash Cow. 鈥 Some teachers do NOT hold teaching degrees and are not qualified I was mortified to find out that some teachers do not hold teaching qualifications and that they don鈥檛 even have degrees!!! yet the school claims everyone is highly qualified and this is a blatant lie to the ministry of education and the parents. Many parents have asked for teachers qualifications to be published on the website like other schools, but the school will never do this for this reason. 鈥 Threatening behaviour The school recently went through an accreditation. Before the accreditation teachers were told what to say and Richard Tangye made sure he was in the room next door to the Accreditation Team. He warns the teachers who he feels will be honest and vocal that the if they didn鈥檛 speak positively of the school during the meetings then expect your job to be on the line! 鈥 No school support with challenging behaviour This has to be the biggest worry for me. The behaviour at school was appalling, in fact it was the worst I had ever experienced during my professional career. Kids would be kids at the end of the day, but the expectations of support from the school was non-existent. You are alone in the classroom. When it goes bad in terms of behaviour it is YOUR fault and you are a bad teacher. 鈥 Blame teachers Working here I feel Richard , the Principal who is never present, and Michael who is completely incompetent have created a very poor atmosphere and moral within the staff. The administration of the school were never to blame, the children were never to blame and had no responsibility, but it was the teachers who were always in the firing line of blame. The moral was awful and teachers were treated as if they did not know what they were doing despite some staff having 20 years plus teaching experience. 鈥 High turnover of staff, staff runners There are countless staff that leave each year and mid year. I suspect none of the other international schools in Lisbon have a staff turnover as high as this school. I鈥檝e met teachers from those schools and none of them are as unhappy as the staff at SDIS. There is NO professional development offered at this school. The school also provides no first aid or health and safety training to any staff members. There is no one at the school who will support you as a teacher. It鈥檚 a shit show from beginning to end. Being unemployed for a year would be a better option than taking a position at this school.

Money Looters If you send your child to this school, the only possible achievement you can hope for, is for them to scrape through the IB Diploma with a pass and the minimum points scored. Failing here is common. They fail on providing basic education, they care very little for students well being and safety, & are discriminatory and racist to certain nationalities. You can be sure that if the owner or any of her leadership are talking to you - you are being lied to. The only process that works well in this school is their banking. The busiest and happiest person at the school is the school attorney, who will sue parents when they leave. They expect parents to pay a full terms notice to leave. The capital levy is non-refundable and if you consider how many people change schools, there is no motivation reason for the school to improve. Leaving students is a money spinner for them each year. Don't waste your time here.

Zero stars should be an option An absolute wreck of a "school". Exists only to squeeze money out of unsuspecting families, treats staff terribly and academics are appalling. Most of the good students know that this school is mediocre at best, which is why they leave. Entire School leadership is a joke. The Principal is incompetent and has achieved nothing in 5 years. He鈥檚 greatest achievement is turning this into the worst school in Lisbon Do not under any circumstances work here or send your children here.

This school is a trash school that just takes parents money and gives us a dirty squashed campus They does nothing for a good school environment. Everything is bad, the food , science labs, there is no good art or music rooms I feel that my education would have been better at even a local school . We spend our days frustrated with teachers who are also frustrated. English teachers who are Portuguese teachers who can鈥檛 speak very well to teach in English There is no respect , very miserable place The principals lie about the problems in this school. It鈥檚 not safe here and even already a student died from a drug overdose. And one small kid lost part of his finger in the football field gate There have been police coming to check school bags but kids just hide stuff in toilets and in outside places The Covid online program was poor quality compared what I saw my colleagues from other schools receiving The school wants blame the IB algorithm for the bad results but the school had bad results every year The principals dont care about kids just smiling at parents like clowns Parents don鈥檛 send your kids here. I see nothing at this school has changed since we left Portugal I had my children at this school for 3 years and can say the only positive Is the school has one or two staff who display care and warmth to the children. I was very concerned when i returned to our home country with glowing reports from SDIS only to discover that my children were way behind academically especially in Maths Talking to other parents who also moved countries and schools, all had the same experience. The children鈥檚 academics are lower than expected and all need tutors and extra lessons to catch up. The grades on school reports are inflated and not true. I鈥檓 happy to see there are a lot more international school choices as parents had limited options when I was there including teachers who told us they were treated very badly by the owners and, teachers are paid very poorly in comparison to the high school fees. I made sure that this school was removed as a school option at my husbands company as they send multiple employees to Lisbon every 2-3 years. I find it interesting that parents who don鈥檛 pay school fees or have a deal with the owner for reduced fees are the only parents who give the school 5 star reviews. This must be on instruction from the owner so be very suspicious to take a 5 star review as credible. The principal is a very poor leader. And is also almost never at school.

We cannot express how happy we are having our daughter in SDIS. She has been there since kindergarten to grade five, now starting grade six. We have had a very positive experience in this school: the students follow an amazing academic program and the teachers are very supportive and nurturing. Stuff and administration have shown our child genuine caring and compassion, all the while providing her with quality education. By watching our child response, we can tell teachers have truly interacted with her and touched her in some way. As matter of facts she鈥檚 very happy and always looking forward to see again her teachers on a Monday or after the holydays.

My daughter has done all the three IB (PYP, MYP and DP) programes and she was very well prepared for Law School. St. Dominic's has great teachers and staff who are always supportive to students in their doubts and difficulties and that strengthen their capacities. It has a great sports programe, my daughter has represented St. Dominic's twice at ISSA tournaments in London. It has also has the Duke of Edinburgh Award available for the students who would like to do it. It even accepts students from other international schools who do not have it. This school has also a very good variety of CAS activities. I believe that I have chosen the best school for my daughter's education, it has prepared her to be an excellent student with great skills of studying, with respect to other nationalities and cultures, to be a creative thinker and to fight for her dreams. If you are looking for a school with a very good environment where everybody look for each other this is the best one!

Despite the school鈥檚 welcoming website, the caring image it portrays does not outweigh the ugliness of the toxic environment that is created and reinforced by the administrators, specifically the owner Catarina Formigo, her egregious Principal Richard Tangye and all the weak individuals they would like to call Leadership. This place is a depressing environment where your students cannot grow and is run by an administration who sees children and family as mere monetary objects. The owners and the Principal and all of the current administration place money before people, and staff are treated with little regard and dignity. Richard Tangye is highly unprofessional and shockingly deceitful - the list doesn鈥檛 end there. Being an IB school, one would think that all administrators would try to uphold and model the values they aim to instill in the staff and children of SDIS. But not this school, they behave like a Mafia, intimidating and bullying staff. They will intimidate parents who criticise and leave the school. They short pay staff, terminate contracts illegally. I believe they count on staff being too afraid to go to lawyers as this will make Richard Tangye angry and place them on his black list. No one in this school supports or guides teachers. Leaving the tyrant owner to continue her abusive behaviour. Over the years both Catarina鈥檚 and Richards persistent bullying and intimidation tactics has done a grave disservice to the school, forcing strong teachers out due to the negative and toxic work environment. High turnover rates are common at international schools, but the number of teachers who flee SDIS, sometimes even before the year or their contract has ended, far exceeds the standard rate. I鈥檓 ashamed that I stayed at this school for as long as i did. In my opinion, this school cannot improve under the current owners or Principal.

I feel I must write about St. Dominic鈥檚 in support of the fight against inequality. There is a lot of racial inequality and injustice based on certain ethnic groups at the school. St. Dominic鈥檚 has asked for and collected from Chinese parents a special placement fee of 30,000 euros per child on top of tuition that does not apply to other ethnic groups. St. Dominic鈥檚 has been known to ask for a full year of school fees upfront from Angolan families. When Brazilian families raised concerns about the school, they were singled out as a group and it was said that no more Brazilians would be admitted to St. Dominic鈥檚, despite the educational needs of Brazilian families moving to Portugal. In sum, families of certain ethnic backgrounds are routinely asked for more money or denied access to the school for speaking up to try and improve conditions. There is also known pay disparity among staff of different backgrounds, creating division at St. Dominic鈥檚. Yet no one is really paid well or treated fairly, since the inner circle consists mostly of family members and friends of the owners. The teachers are held to a high standard, asked to show compassion and to be fair but this same courtesy is not provided to families, students and teachers in return by the school鈥檚 gatekeepers. You see in plain view teachers, families and students silenced. Some international students are also housed in expensive living quarters that are not inspected and without much regard for the health and safety of those students under the school鈥檚 care. The school has clearly taken advantage of people from Chinese, Angolan and Brazilian backgrounds time and again. By such actions, St. Dominic鈥檚 is part of the problem and has ingrained in the school culture abuse of power, injustice, inequality, unfairness, bullying, intimidation tactics, and targeting people based on ethnic group 鈥 wherever they can grab the most money. When it is known among families that key decisions are made because of what country the person comes from and monetary greed, this goes against IB values. This kind of way to run a school is not and never was acceptable. It is time to pay attention, change the power imbalance and stand up to corruption, nepotism, misconduct, elitism, classism, toxicity and the extremely poor treatment of employees, students and families. Where is the money from the salaries of teachers that the school has withheld over and over and over again? Where has the extra 30,000 euros from numerous Chinese families gone? Look to the power of protest all over the world right now and reject a dishonest, corrupt school where teachers are afraid to ask for money that they rightfully earned. Insist on fair treatment for teachers and for everyone associated with St. Dominic鈥檚, including the Chinese, Angolan and Brazilian families in the community. Why? Because it is the right thing to do. If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.

Like all things in life a business, school or family is reflected by leadership and this helps create the top down culture. This school is horrendous it lets down pupils, staff and the community it is meant to serve due to the very low standards and good care practices that the school management team fail to follow and develop responsibly as the motivation of the school is all wrong. The school is co owned by an ex banker and a businesswoman who have cashed in on the rush of overseas expats currently pouring into Lisbon and Cascais. They promote the school as an IB school with high standards, well i can tell you from direct experience they charge the same fees as award wining well managed schools like IPS or St. Julien's yet deliver a totally sub standard product, from inferior school resources to the salaries the teachers are paid to the general up keep of the school. The morale of most of the teaching staff is low, many parents experience this school when new arrivals and quickly move when they get places at alternative schools. There is a history of children being neglected, bullied and solutions not resolved, children having bad accidents and not being treated properly and even some cases of the children managing to slip through the defective security system. My advice visit the competition then you will fully understand the reality and why they have waiting lists and St Dominic's does not and is the easiest Int. school to gain entry to in Cascais and Lisbon.

Overall

A school that has no academic leadership and run poorly as a profit based business for its owners. Academic results are terrible and there is zero discipline or behavioral policy within the school

just writing to say I am flabbergasted by some bad reviews left here. Is the school perfect ? No Does it deserve one star ? No The school have already started a major overhaul of their installations in the last couple of years, have pulled out from the ground the new senior building in less than 4 months in order to be ready for September 2018/19 It might take a few more years for the school re-do to be finished but it is getting there. We also have traveled around the world and went through a bunch of international schools, here my kid in senior is thriving , very satisfied with the curriculum and would not want to go to any other international school to pass her diploma. I know the school for the last five years, in my experience St Dominic always have been trying to improve and always have done their best to address issues. More is coming and I am sure they will resolve management matters in the future.

Our son is at Saint Dominic's since 2 years and he is happy there. The education level is very similar to the other international schools he has been at. Some teachers are better than other, but this is normal. The results of the school seem to be within the average of international schools. A comment to the 1 * ratings: I find it very strange that nearly all of them have just one rating posted in Google, this looks like they have just been created to bring the school rating down. Please have a look yourself. Definitely 1 * is not correct or fair.

If you are looking for a school that gives strong academic foundation or progress for your children, this is not the place to look. Its below average. Will children be happy here? Oh yes. A school without rules, standards and expectations - usually quite hard to find children who don't like this Can you compare this to the standards of the 黑料福利社s that all have waiting lists ? Absolutely not. There are great schools, average schools and then schools like St Dominics that are below average and below standard. But that works for some people. If you are not expecting university entrance for your children and have very low standards for them this place will work.

St Dominic鈥檚 has for the many years lived on its past good reputation but that is fast coming to an end. It is a for profit school that is now full of locally hired teachers, many with poor English and also with no IB or international teaching experience. Some can even be questioned if they have any teaching qualification. The owners employ many family members in key positions to keep tight power. There are many stories from past teachers of poor treatment of staff and unfair labour practices relating to salaries and compensation My advices is to scratch the school off your list.
